Maitland Christmas Tea: Hustle and Bustle

This image was captured during the raffle portion of the Maitland Christmas Tea.

I am regretting not buying a raffle ticket, but who am I to rob these folks of those great prizes?! Whatever they were....

Maitland Christmas Tea - The Raffle

It's raffle time at the Maitland Christmas Tea.

Somehow I missed out on buying tickets for that. I have no idea what was being raffled off...but hey, it's all for a good cause!

Maitland Christmas Tea - The Tree

A shot of the hall which hosted the Maitland Christmas Tea last Sunday.

The Christmas tree was balsam'y and fragrant, as it should be. A pair of stuffed angels are hanging out on the wall, waiting to be claimed by a lucky raffle ticket owner...

Maitland Christmas Tea - The Sweets

Oh, the sweets. Sweets so sweet, they make your teeth hurt....in a good way. Sweets that make you diabetic in one bite.

The butter cookie was 'melt in your mouth' perfection. A tart square that had rhubarb in it was a pleasant surprise. A slice pumpkin cheesecake was sinfully tasty.

Paired with delicious, strong tea. I can think of no better way to spend a warm November afternoon.

Maitland Christmas Tea

Apologies for the gruesome state of my plate. My camera's lens fogged up after an evening of sitting in my cold car. By the time the lens cleared off, I had finished half of my cold plate!

Chicken salad from scratch, scrumptious potato salad, cheese and cucumber slices.... This plate did not leave me wanting. Add to that, the festive tablecloth and boisterous sounds inside the Maitland Community Hall...this was quite the event!

More pics to follow...

Maitland Baked Bean Supper Review

Like a warm snuggie on a cold afternoon, this supper is pure comfort!

It was a cloudy afternoon, but luckily the rain held off so we didn't have to get wet running from the parking lot to the hall. No mad lineups at this supper, those folks in First South are missing out....

We were greeted at the door with:

"Oh, I remember you guys..."

I guess we are slowly becoming regulars at this supper!

I had to take some pictures of this empty table before it filled up with diners. I got a couple strange looks while I was taking the shots, nothing new there. Note all the matching plates and cups on the table in the following shots:

As always, the 'table cakes' were in attendance. We were seated beside a scrumptious looking carrot cake. Oh, temptation loomed....

Before too long our server took our order, usually they start with a single question:

"The works?"

To which I always answer:

"Yes please!"

The works consisted of the usual fare: a weiner broiled to perfection, awesome baked beans and scalloped potatoes and ham instead of a chicken drumstick. See for yourself:

Not to be left out, there were copious amounts of salads on the table to enjoy as well. The ever popular broccoli and sauerkraut salads, pickled beets, bread and butter pickles, cole slaw, an interesting rice salad that was being elusive further down the table and big honkin' bowls of potato salad:

As we filled our hungry bellies with good food, we had a few laughs, but mostly our attention was focussed on the food. A sure sign of a good meal!

Several slices of sweet brown molasses bread later, it was time for dessert. I skipped the table cake and went straight for the home made custard pie. It was delecate and delicious as expected. No shortage of choices of both pies and cakes, it paid to show up relatively early!

As always, it's worth the drive to Maitland!

Like a good neighbour, maitland variety supper is there.

Maitland Variety Supper
Sat., Nov.8

We were not going to pass up a chance to attend this supper. Especially since it was exactly a year ago to the day when we missed attending this one due to an impromptu delivery of a foot of snow! Not___fun.

We arrived shortly after the supper started, the hall was about 1/2 full, lots of empty places to sit and a full list of pies for dessert. Victory was ours!

The women minding the door asked us how far we had travelled, one of them commented:

"We get so excited when we see young people at these suppers!"

Her co-worker reconized us from a previous supper and also noted:

"Well, anyone under 50 is considered young, here!"

These Maitland suppers are awesome and this one was no exception! We both asked for "everything" by default and started to drool at the table cake and other sweets while we waited. Our steaming plates of food arrived before long:

The cabbage was sweet and delicious, the weiner was just what the doctor ordered, baked beans were molasses-y sweet and good, scalloped potatoes didn't leave me wanting and the fried chicken rounded out the hot meal.

Home made pickles, cole slaw and sauerkraut salad were quickly gobbled up...We found the potato salad later on and made room for it on our plates. There was also an odd carrot and red-brown sauce salad we didn't end up trying..perhaps it was catalina dressing?

The showcase of this meal, was the table cake. No contest. It was hard to avoid, as you can see from this picture:

Normally I don't indulge, but I felt oddly obliged in this case. We lucked out and it was an amazing carrot cake! Also within arms reach was a tiny plate of various brownies and pieces of cake. Needless to say, we left overly full of food. Oh, I also sampled one of the pies on offer, a subtle pumpkin pie:

It reminded me of the squash pie I've sampled here before. You could tell it was made with real pumpkin flesh, not that canned crap! Not too spicy, it was true perfection...now in convenient pie format!

Several cups of tea later (where was the suspendered tea guy? we're worried....), we staggered back to the car. It was 4:41 pm.

We must be assimilating well....

Maitland Baked and Ham Supper

It's hard not to like what you get at this supper. Sadly, no pictures to share for this report. I am still kicking myself for not having it with me!

We passed by the Maitland hall ~3:30, and the hardcore locals were already lined up in the parking lot! After running a bunch of errands, we hit the supper on the trip back home. It was not as packed as we anticipated, with only about half of the seats occupied. Usually this supper is packed to the rafters, so not sure what else was going on that afternoon.

We sat right in front of a gorgeous table cake, complete with white icing dripping over the sides of the cake like soap suds running down the side of a car. There were several yummy side dishes on the table including: pickled beets, bread and butter pickles, coleslaw, an amazing broccoli salad and a vinegar based coleslaw (sans mayonnaise).

I chose ham as my option, but I realized later I could have had ham AND a weiner! Oh well, Lisa was kind enough to give me a bite of hers. Dinner was pretty standard. Dark, molasses-y baked beans, really good scalloped potatoes and good 'ole picnic ham. The bread basket was brimming with oatmeal bread, molasses brown bread, cheese rolls, pillsbury crescent type thingees and your standard dinner roll.

The 'tea guy' was absent from this dinner, I neglected to find out why. He's pretty much a fixture at these events, I hope he's okay. I managed to drink about 6 cups of their fine black tea elixir!

The highlight of the dinner were our dining neighbours. We sat next to a rowdy bunch of grannies and it was great! They weren't shy to ask for what they wanted,

"Now, I KNOW there's a cherry cake back there somewhere." probably because she baked it!
"WHERE did that chocolate cake go?"

Our resident table cake was the subject of lots of discussion:

"Are those raisins or chocolate chips?"
"I think they are raisins.."
"Oh, I don't care for raisins, must be a spice cake..."
"My father used to tell me that my mom would sweep dead flies in to my raisin box." Nice...

We kept getting prodded to take a slice of the cake, but eventually a nearby diner took the plunge. It was spice cake on the outside and a yellow cake on the inside:

"Ohhhh, it's a Tom and Jerry cake!"
"Yup, it's a Tom and Jerry cake..."

After my INCREDIBLE slice of custard pie (did I mention it was incredible?), I managed to scarf down a piece of the Tom and Jerry cake. The cherry cake further down the table had me looking, but there was 'no room at the inn', in my stomach!

Wow, I still want another slice of that custard pie!

Update! Here's a recipe for what looks like the same Tom & Jerry Cake:

Recipe for Tom and Jerry Cake

Ingredients:
2 cups sugar
1 cup butter
1 cup milk
3 cups unbleached flour
3 large eggs
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon vanilla
Angel Food Cake Pan

For 1st Bowl

In large bowl, mix the above ingredients with a wooden spoon.
Mix till smooth. You can use a hand mixer if you wish.
I have never made this with an electric mixer, so I cannot tell
you how the cake comes out.

Get another large bowl, and place 1/2 the batter into it. bowl.
Ingredients for the second bowl:
3 tablespoons Grandmas Molasses
1 teaspoon cloves, crushed
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 cups of raisins, which have been dusted with flour.
Mix all together with wooden spoon or hand mixer.

Place the mixture in the second bowl (the darker mixture)
into a greased and lightly floured Angel Food Cake Pan.
Now, pour the 1st bowl of light batter on top of the dark batter.
Place in a 350 degree oven for about 50-60 minutes.
Remove from pan when warm. You may use powdered sugar on top.

Annual Maitland Christmas Tea

Maitland, NS
Nov. 24, 2007

It's never hard to convince me to attend a community supper at the local Maitland hall, and the annual Christmas tea is no exception.

The hall is set up with a slightly different layout than your average supper. There are more single tables, and half of the hall is reserved for craft, bake and other assorted tables.

We received some knowing glances when we sat down, I guess we're regulars now! We were set up with the oh, so delicious tea that makes the Maitland suppers stand out and we quickly received our plates of food:

The turkey salad was chock full of REAL turkey and the ham was yummy as well. The bun came pre-buttered and the little container of cranberry jelly was also a nice accent to the meal. The coleslaw was homemade, crunchy and delicious as usual.

Our plate came complete with all the little details, right down to the sprinkle of paprika on the potato salad, nestled on some crisp iceberg lettuce...doesn't it just make you want to say, "awwww"?

And then....the sweets...oh, the sweets...Chocolate covered peanut butter balls, skor toffee bars, chocolate covered coconut cherry balls, mint bars, and still the sweets kept coming. My only regret is that the batteries died on my camera so I couldn't take pics of the sweets for you all to savour.

The neighbouring chatter was fun to listen to as well. Our nearest neighbour entertained us with stories of when she buys finger cookies on sale, what cookies freeze well, what she and her husband had for dinner the last time out and what candy to buy for Christmas. Rivetting stuff! I was particularly impressed with her thrify nature with the Xmas candy, "why should I buy a 10 dollar box, when he's just as happy to eat what I get from the dollar store?" Why indeed?

The tea was capped off buy my purchase of 2 pairs of hand knit mittens for children and one hand knit dish rag. All for the grand total of 4 dollars. (^_^) The knitted goods vendor had a chuckle when I commented, "surely some kid I know needs mittens!"

To paraphrase the Beatles, a splendid time was had by all!

Maitland Variety Supper

May 5, 2007
Maitland Community Hall
Maitland, NS

It's always nice to go to this supper, it's kind of like coming home after a long trip. Some things never change, and for the most part, neither does this supper.

We drove past the hall around 3:15, a good 45 minutes before it was supposed to start. Sure enough, there were two cars in the parking lot, waiting.......I guess they really wanted to have a slice of that coconut cream pie (we were not so lucky).

We arrived to a packed hall, and as usual, we were the only 'youngsters' there. We started to recognize some faces from the area. The guy taking tickets walks a nearby dirt road every morning. Same guy serving the coffee. Same guy serving the tea. All's right with the world in Maitland.

We found a spot to sit without much trouble and had a bit of a wait till our place setting was cleaned up and our 'orders' were taken. It was more of a: "you guys want a bit of everything that's left?" kind of order, of course we said: "yes"! Fairly quickly, our plates arrived:

Somehow these pictures never really capture how appetizing the food looks when it arrives....no wiener on the plate, to Lisa's dismay, but they were replaced by some delicious cabbage rolls!

We tucked in to the offering: fried chicken, scalloped potatoes, baked beans, swedish meatballs, cabbage rolls and ham made up the hot portion of the meal.

We each got a spoon full of the delicious broccoli salad that was on the table, as well as: potato salad, cole slaw, pickled beets, bread and butter pickles and an unusual pickled salad that encouraged me to have two helpings.

Oh man, how could i forget the sweets? By the time we got there, the ever popular coconut cream pie was off the desert list (and kraut slaw and weiners were off the dinner menu), so we opted for the delicious 'hole of coconut' cake that was sitting in front of us the whole time. It was made by one of our server's aunts and was delish, of course!

I hope to publish another tidbit to the blog if I can sort it out...stay tuned...
