Newfoundland: The Road to Tickle Point

Tickle Point
St. Paul's, NL
June 20, 2013

It seems like such a long time since we walked out this rocky road to scope out the fishing shacks of Tickle Point.  You can see a bank of fog lurking in the distance, it disappeared as quickly as it arrived.  Thick and grey.

Sappyfest 8: Shotgun Jimmie

Sappyfest 8

Aug.3, 2013

One of the highlights of this year's Sappyfest was Shotgun Jimmie's set.  If you see him playing in your area, do yourself a favour and check him out.  Great stage presence, consistently well crafted lyrics, he's a solid live performer.  He did not disappoint that night!  Here's hoping that Sappyfest comes back next summer, fingers crossed!

Sappyfest 8: Step Right Up!

Sappyfest 8
Sackville, NB
Aug. 3, 2013

This collection of carnival games was a fundraiser for Struts & Faucet.  At first their were adults in those booths but eventually they were taken over by kids...except for the 'Shot in the Dark' booth which involved a toy gun.  That one had an adult in it all weekend. ^_^

It was hilarious to watch the kids hustle the passing crowds, trying to get them to play their games.  The kids are all right!

2013 Atlantic Hand Mowing Championships: Hay Stacking

Ross Farm
New Ross, NS
Aug. 25, 2013

One of several contestants trying their best at the hay stacking competition.  It was a very hot day at Ross Farm, I'm sure being showered in scratchy hay didn't help matters.

The winner was judged on the weight of hay lifted as a percentage of their body weight...hopefully no one went crazy and tried to drop a weight class to win this one! ;-)  I watched several people hoist ~ 50 lbs of hay on their best attempts.  No small feat!

To be honest, I have no idea where Lower Rose Bay ends and Kingsburg/Upper Kingsburg begins.  At any rate, this one is on the road from Rose Bay to Kingsburg, close to the turn off to Upper Kingsburg.

Gorgeous!

10th Annual Maritime Hand Mowing Championships

The 10th annual Maritime Hand Mowing Championships were held at Ross Farm last weekend and what a glorious weekend it was!  Saturday's events included scythe sharpening and peening workshops as well lots of hand mowing tips and tricks.

Sunday was the main event, with novice classes competing in the morning and the well attended open class in the afternoon.  Before the afternoon festivities, there was an excellent and delicious lunch on offer.  If I heard correctly, this is a Yorkshire pig, which was roasted whole over a propane/charcoal mix.  The pork rinds/cracklin's were amazing.

Roast Pig BBQ!!!

Competitors were judged on 4 criteria:  Time to mow strip, width of swath taken, height of stubble (lower is better) and evenness of stubble height across the swath.

The wind was sporadic which made for a sweaty and hot afternoon.  18 people competed in the open class before a decent sized crowd of ~50 onlookers.  I was surprised I did not hear the phrase, "ready, set, MOW" all afternoon. Was I the only one uttering that phrase to myself?

I wish I had taken a break from the action to see the resident cooper in action, but that will have to wait for another visit to Ross Farm.

I hope you enjoy my captures from the afternoon.  Check out Ross Farm's events page for upcoming activities.  This weekend's family participation days look like a lot of fun for young and not-so-young folks.

A couple young whippersnappers check out a human whipper snipper.

Ross Farm Wheat.  To paraphrase W.P. Kinsella , if you grow it, they will come.

A wide swath!

Cardboard knight battles and bicycle jousting were on offer at this free patch of grass off the Bridge St..  The bicycle jousting was very fun, I'm sure the paper horse head on the bike improved my performance. ;-)

I'm glad we took Andrew up on his offer to "suit up".  I wonder if the young onlookers enjoyed the show as much as those who participated?  Too cool for school, I guess.

Newfoundland: Wonderful Western Brook Pond

Western Brook Pond
Gros Morne National Park, NL
June 20, 2013

I could fill up a post full of travel brochure cliches to describe the stunning vistas one can view on the Western Brook Pond boat tour.  I'll let the image speak for itself.

If you find yourself in Gros Morne, do yourself a favour and take the boat tour of the park, it is worth every penny.

Newfoundland: Stunning Green Gardens

Green Gardens
Gros Morne National Park, NL

June 18, 2013

Spoiler alert, this is one of the many rewards you will receive when hiking the excellent Green Gardens trail in Gros Morne National Park.

This shot marked the point where we turned around and headed back up the several hundred stairs that stood between us and our car.  I would love to attempt the complete loop of this trail, but maybe when I'm up to fording Wallace brook....in June.

Newfoundland: Green Gardens

Green Gardens Trail
Gros Morne National Park
June 18, 2013

Green Gardens: yet another stunning trail to hike while in Gros Morne.

This one involves many, MANY stairs to traverse.  You head down the stairs towards the coast.  Unfortunately, what goes down...must go up.  Pacing yourself on the reverse/uphill trek is recommended.

The portion of the trail that winds along the coast is the pay off.  There are several backcountry camping spots along the coast which I'd love to check out on another visit.

Sheep can be seen grazing along this trail on the many meadows/fields.  The landscape almost reminded me of the Scottish Highlands in parts.  A highlight of our visit, for sure.

Newfoundland: Trout River Pond

Trout River Pond, NL
June 17, 2013

This is the reward you claim when hiking the stunning Trout River Pond trail in Gros Morne National Park.  I am glad our friends/guides encouraged us to complete the hike, they kept talking about "the payoff".  Boy, they were not exaggerating!

The trail is a ~15 km round trip.  The first half winds its way through typical softwood forest.  It is only once you emerge from the trees that you start to get stunning views of the tablelands.

It was odd how quickly I became accustomed to sitting in front of a landscape that more resembles Mars than Earth.  The contrast is indeed extreme.  One side of the pond (aka lake) is treed/wooded while the other side is stark and rocky.  Those rocks form what is known as the Tablelands, one of the few places on Earth where one can walk on the Earth's mantle!

I highly encourage one and all to experience this trail and Gros Morne National Park.  It is truly one of our national treasures.
