The Dread, Jon McKiel & COUSINS House Show - Jan. 23, 2010

The Dread, Jon McKiel & COUSINS House Show
Petite Riviere, NS
Jan. 23, 2010

An otherwise chilly January evening was warmed up in Petite Riviere this weekend by three bands, who graced the living room of a palatial home down an icy side road.

The bay windows were buzzing to the beat of The Dread as I arrived. Smokers, banished from the interior, bundled up and inhaled on the porch. Outdoor shoes were a no-no indoors, and the mound of footwear grew by two with my addition to the mud room pile.

Inside it was boisterous and friendly, all manner of entertainment flowed freely while The Dread blasted away. Someone had kindly left a bag of ear plugs on a table for one and all. Thanks, someone!

A guided tour of the house revealed floor upon floor, room upon room and all manner of interesting nooks and crannies in between. Someone exclaimed "this could be a church!" when they entered the basement, with its vaulted ceilings and granite foundation stones.

Later, Jon McKiel started playing delicious songs, close songs, dancing songs, my kind of songs. Klarka inspired on bass. The crowd revelled.

COUSINS came in waves, ebbing and flowing, shrieking and cooing. Dreamy vocals had me floating on waves, basking in a sunny blueberry field, sitting in a quiet corner. Sweater vests must make for good fills, the drummer had the former and the latter.

The evening devolved into hangouts, make outs, hookups and of course, more jamming.

It never did warm up that evening, and the windows were still buzzing when I left.
