Conquerall Bank Fire Department Planked Halibut Supper
Conquerall Bank, NS
Aug. 24, 2008
I have been anticipating this supper all summer. The fine folks of the Conquerall Bank fire department, as usual, did not disapoint.
The waiting area quickly filled up, the air was still and hot. If you wanted to record the sound of 'anticipation', this was the place. Locals' faces lit up as they entered the hall and saw old friends, gossip quickly followed. I could do a photo exhibit of perms, ear rings and blouses!:
People kept standing up like groundhogs as they anticipated hearing their number called, only to sit down again as they waited....
After a relatively brief wait (~30 minutes), we were seated...next to two gentlemen I will describe as the gluttonous grandpas. There were busily comparing notes:
"...i find with these dinners you pay more and get less every year." oh gawd...here it comes..
"...and the Den Mart, the second the Turkey Burger closed, they put their prices up." No doubt they might have raised their prices, along with most other restaurants grappling with increased prices.
"...at some of these suppers we go to, we get our pie first so we get the kind we like" i guess I've picked up this tactic from the seasoned pro's...it is a let down when you can't get some of that sweet coconut cream pie...
"...you get your money's worth at the variety suppers" No arguments there!
If these two gentlemen found $12 too steep a price for a decent serving of planked halibut, AMAZING mashed potatoes, home made cole slaw, sweet mixed pickles, a bun, fresh cuke and tomato slices, beverage, not one...but two pieces of pie...what do they think is a good deal? I think it was the one fellow going in for a second piece of pie that 'irked' me....
I'll let you be the judge on the 'value' of the meal:
Delectable. Many thanks to all the volunteers who put together such a great meal, for so many people, and managed to keep a smile on their faces while doing it.
