St. Andrew's Presbyterian Pancake Supper

Shrove Tuesday has come and gone, luckily we managed to hit one of the many pancake suppers.

It's hard to give directions to a church or church hall in Lunenburg, there are so many! Luckily, I had a vague idea where this church hall was located, we found it without too much trouble.

Shortly after we were seated, our plates of pancakes and sausages arrived. Pretty simple, 2 pancakes and 3 breakfast sausages. Sadly, my camera's lens was fogged up so I couldn't get pictures of the plate. But, I did manage to get some shots from the kitchen!

Sorry folks, you can run but you can't hide from my camera! ^_^

While I was in the kitchen, I managed to also get a shot of the pancakes on the griddle:

The tables in the hall were arranged a little too tightly....Our table kept getting knocked about every time someone tried to walk past it. Somehow, none of the liquids on our table spilled...

I thought pancakes, sausages and tea or coffee were the extent of the supper. But, oh, no....there was dessert as well! Sorry pancreas, time for some insulin shock!

A delectable way to end the evening!

Thinking of warmer days...

...don't get me wrong, I actually enjoy winter....but on a drizmal Forevuary day like today, it's time to think of sunnier times:

Pentz United Valentine's Tea

This wasn't a typical Valentine's day event, but in retrospect, it was way better than splashing down ~$100 for a 'fancy' meal for this Hallmark holiday...

We arrived to find a parking lot packed to capacity, but luckily we quickly found ourselves a parking spot without too much trouble.

The church hall had all sorts of Valentine's cutouts decorating the walls and also some office dividers, very cute:

There was a large contingent of Red Hat Society ladies at one end of the hall, hooting and laughing and having a grand old time. The remainder of the hall was peppered with church regulars and probably a few 'transients' like ourselves. I also noticed a man taking pictures of the attendees. Hey, that's MY gig! Oh well, the word had to get out eventually, right?

Before too long, our plate of sandwiches arrived...the usual fare: egg salad, chicken salad, devilled ham and pickles, cream cheese and cherry, a mystery meat concoction and a cream cheese and pickle roll:

There was also a server walking around with a tray of fresh fruit, an offering hard to resist in the midst of 'Forevuary'!:

We polished off our sandwich plate, and then it was on to the main event...SQUARES!!!

I don't think there was a square I didn't love...mind you, we didn't manage to finish the plate. Not surprising, just look how many squares were on the plate! All manner of chocolate, cocoa, coconut, graham crackers, cherries, duncan hines icing and other sweet ingredients were represented. My midsection is probably still paying the price...

Last, but certainly not least was their excellent selection (and inadvertent display) of tea cups, enjoy!:

Ice Fishing!

(updated--brightened most of my images a little bit)
I've been talking about ice fishing for YEARS...this weekend, I finally did it!

First step, make a hole:

It took a while to break through, the ice was a solid 2 feet thick...

Almost there....:

Success!:

I like the sine wave nature of the auger:

We drilled 4 holes before we caught our first one, once we found the right depth, we caught 2 rainbows:

Blockhouse Fire Dept. Baked Bean, Ham & Scalloped Potato Supper

In my mind, there's no better way to celebrate a glorious winter day, than to fill your belly with some home made baked beans. Earlier in the afternoon I worked up a healthy appetite skiing on the freshly groomed cross country ski trails at Kejimkujik national park. What a treat!

Thankfully, no storm date was necessary

Even though the parking lot was nearly full, there were plenty of seats available in the large hall. It was a brightly lit space, complete with the odd flickering fluorescent tube for good measure.

We were soon greeted by a smiling fire department volunteer, who took our order after asking if we wanted 'the works'. We got our pie before our dinner arrived, an unorthodox approach to serving for these events, but no matter. If anything, it made me want to eat my dinner quickly so I could tuck in to this delicious slice:

We were 'cow eyeing' other slices of lemon meringue as they were brought to nearby diners. Some had 'sky high' meringue on top! I was happy with my slice, complete with the delectable oily drops, waiting to be devoured...

Soon enough, dinner arrived. Standard fare....the beans were delcious! The ham was tender, the pineapple ring and half maraschino cherry were a fun touch, the coleslaw was suprisingly good and the scalloped potatoes did not dissapoint.

Eventually, we had to send a uniformed fire dept. volunteer on a bit of a hunt for some milk for our tea. His hard work paid off, luckily we didn't have to use the coffee creamers on the table, which were the only dairy products in sight.

All in all, a great dinner and a welcome respite from the annual winter 'drought' of community suppers. Keep 'em coming!

I haven't had a chance to change the white balance, the sun was a little pinker than in these shots, but you get the idea:
