Conquerall Bank Strawberry Supper Review

June 27, 2010
Conquerall Bank, NS

It was a foggy and chilly Sunday across the river, down by the showah, ....but it was sunny and hot in Conquerall Bank and in to town.

I've been to suppers here before that involved a large crowd and lots of waiting. This one had a 'normal' sized crowd and hardly any wait to get seated. A pleasant surprise!

No ordering here, you sit down and before you know it, food shows up:

The rolled up luncheon ham, meh. I could do without it, though I ate what was on my plate.

The beans were perfect, the 'gravy' in particular, was stellar.

And that potato salad, as one of my dining companions noted, was "chock-a-block" with goodies inside. I'm assuming a little mustard was added to get the yellow colour, and there were bits of red onion inside as well. We all agreed it was a contender for best potato salad ever.

Of course, the ever delicious molasses brown bread was on offer...so sweet. Coleslaw and bread and butter pickles rounded out the offerings on the table.

This strawberry supper was different than most, because it was a bowl of berries for dessert, not shortcake. No matter, a sprinkle of sugar and a splash of milk was all the berries required.

I love the way the pitcher of milk is sweating. I tried and I tried, but none of my shots captured it perfectly...

Sadly, no epic stories to tell from this meal, it was a pleasant afternoon out with friends. We left with bellies full; at 5:15 pm.

Eat dessert first...

It was hard to resist, but somehow I didn't eat anything from this tantalizing plate of squares until after I'd finished my meal.

My eyes are still drawn to that marshmallow square concoction...

A review of last Sunday's Strawberry Supper in Conquerall Bank to follow, stay tuned.

Sausage fest

Ah, I see who's got a dirty mind...no, not that kind of sausage..sheesh.

I love that rainbow swiss chard!

Okay, I gotta go, I'm in the middle of a big Bike race!

Shot hastily from the Lahave ferry this past Sunday, apparently some of these guys raced for 160 km!

There was a stiff onshore wind that afternoon, though on this leg of the race it must've provided a nice tailwind up the river.

Points if you catch the reference in the title...

Mmmmack attack!

Asparagus, mushrooms, herring (top photo, in foreground) and mackerel are all local and in season...except that 'tater. Shame on me, that should be a new potato.

I will redeem myself and buy some new potatoes when it's time to make some hodge podge. Mmmm, hodge podge...

Church roof gets some 'bling'

I'm glad I stopped to get this shot on Saturday, the field of yellow caught my eye.

One day later it had been mowed and the yellow flowers were gone.

This church (name escapes me) recently got new siding and a gleaming metal roof and spire. I think it looks great, especially against that blue sky and sea of yellow!

*update* I have it from a reliable source, that this church is now privately owned...which would explain the expensive reno's!

I'll have to act quickly to capture these blossoms before they are gone for the season.

They are a sea of colour right now, a nice way to be greeted as I come home!

Looks can be deceiving...

Pretty little plant...unless you are an insect and you happen to land on it.

The sundew plant will slowly close its tendrils as it digests its victim.

Carniverous plants, love 'em.

Foxy fox

Spotted by Risser's Beach provincial park on Friday.

It didn't seem to worried by my presence, looked a little ragged and hungry.

I wonder if it lives in the dunes behind the beach?

At any rate, another shot of the carnage that are the Grimm Rd. burnouts.

Breaking: Mill cove burnout madness!!!

Mill Cove burnout, it just goes on and on and on...

Thanks to intrepid brake burn chaser, Ulo, for the video!

As promised, more seagull vs. eagle shots

These seagulls were tenacious, to say the least! They performed repeated strafing runs at the eagle's head!

Occasionally the eagle would look up, as if to say, what__the__eff?

Tuesday, 1 June 2010

Yes Napoleon, the eagle does have large talons..

More shots from the seagull vs. eagle session last week.

This time, a shot I snapped as the eagle took off, with a zoomed in version to boot!
