St. Mark's Annual Christmas Bazaar and Luncheon
Last time we were at St. Mark's, it was a failed attempt to attend their Roast Beef supper, they ran out of food. Luckily, this time we managed to arrive in time for some good eats!
The basement of the church was the venue for their "Christmas Bazaar". Those in attendance were decidedly the 'blue rinse' crowd. There were a dozen or so people sitting and enjoying their cold plates. We were warmly received and seated as we waited for our food:
Pretty standard fare for this type of luncheon. The chicken salad was made from scratch, phew! The potato salad was really, really good. A hint of onion, but not too stinky, and of course, very potato-y.
Sadly, I didn't get a shot of my desert. I sampled the gum drop cake, and Lisa tried the chocolate cake. After we received our cakes, we were both bummed to realize that there was carrot cake on offer, but we weren't offered it in our list of available deserts! :-( At any rate, the luncheon was great and next time I'll ask for carrot cake!
After we polished off our cakes, we perused the craft and bake tables. The baked goods were almost picked clean, but I managed to score some delectable chocolate dipped oat cake type cookies, w00t!
There were deals galore for preserves and jellies. I picked up pickled beets, bread and butter pickles and cucumber relish. I spotted some zucchini jelly which for some reason I didn't buy a jar?!?
I regret it now, come back zuke jelly, come baaaaack!!

Like a good neighbour, maitland variety supper is there.
Maitland Variety Supper
Sat., Nov.8
We were not going to pass up a chance to attend this supper. Especially since it was exactly a year ago to the day when we missed attending this one due to an impromptu delivery of a foot of snow! Not___fun.
We arrived shortly after the supper started, the hall was about 1/2 full, lots of empty places to sit and a full list of pies for dessert. Victory was ours!
The women minding the door asked us how far we had travelled, one of them commented:
"We get so excited when we see young people at these suppers!"
Her co-worker reconized us from a previous supper and also noted:
"Well, anyone under 50 is considered young, here!"
These Maitland suppers are awesome and this one was no exception! We both asked for "everything" by default and started to drool at the table cake and other sweets while we waited. Our steaming plates of food arrived before long:
The cabbage was sweet and delicious, the weiner was just what the doctor ordered, baked beans were molasses-y sweet and good, scalloped potatoes didn't leave me wanting and the fried chicken rounded out the hot meal.
Home made pickles, cole slaw and sauerkraut salad were quickly gobbled up...We found the potato salad later on and made room for it on our plates. There was also an odd carrot and red-brown sauce salad we didn't end up trying..perhaps it was catalina dressing?
The showcase of this meal, was the table cake. No contest. It was hard to avoid, as you can see from this picture:
Normally I don't indulge, but I felt oddly obliged in this case. We lucked out and it was an amazing carrot cake! Also within arms reach was a tiny plate of various brownies and pieces of cake. Needless to say, we left overly full of food. Oh, I also sampled one of the pies on offer, a subtle pumpkin pie:
It reminded me of the squash pie I've sampled here before. You could tell it was made with real pumpkin flesh, not that canned crap! Not too spicy, it was true perfection...now in convenient pie format!
Several cups of tea later (where was the suspendered tea guy? we're worried....), we staggered back to the car. It was 4:41 pm.
We must be assimilating well....

Low on Vitamin U? Then you need....
Sauerkraut! Sauerkraut supper, to be exact...
This cold that is going around is a killer and my partner in crime was looking like she could use a home cooked meal. We settled upon the Lunenburg United Church's Sauerkraut Supper, a first for us to try out.
It was a chilly Sunday as we scoured Lunenburg for the United Church. As luck would have it, we found the Anglican, Lutheran and Presbyterian churches before we eventually found our destination.
The hall was expansive, about 2/3 of the tables were filled which made it easy to find a place to sit and rest. The male servers were all dressed formally, most wearing white shirts and ties. Before too long, a gentleman approached us and only asked:
"One scoop of potatoes, or two?"
I guess it's assumed you want everything else? At any rate, we quickly got our plates. It was a feast for the eyes and a welcome meal for those afflicted by a cold:
The corned beef was cooked perfectly, not salty at all. The mashed pototoes and sauerkraut were also delicious! The brown bread was just how I like it, a little sweet...My only wish was some mustard on the table, or mustard pickles. After we had finished our meal, we noticed a big 'ole bottle of yellow mustard on a nearby table. Oh well, we should've asked....
Dessert consisted of a familiar offering of pies. Luckily for me, I tried the coconut cream pie this time:
Several cups of tea later, and we were out of there. Lisa's cold was starting to win the next round...We left satisfied, bellies full of home cooked love, and all before 6 pm!(>_<)
