Blockhouse Fire Dept. Hall-- Blockhouse, NS
April 20, 2008
I remember seeing this one advertised in a Mun. of Lunenburg mailout that listed upcoming community events. I'm glad we got advance warning, because this is not one we like to miss.
The hall was sparsely laid out, with only ~10 tables spread throughout the almost cavernous hall. We lucked out and got a table that was actually lit well (photog in me was probably drawn to the light). The table was decked out in all of the Fire Dept.'s finery, tea cups and saucers, little plates, a bowl of bread and butter pickles and the other usual condiments. In no time at all, we were presented with the sandwiches, and took one of each kind:
Another server gave us each a plate with coleslaw, potato salad, cheese and ham. Pretty much a perfect lunch. We nibbled on the tiny sammies, kept drinking tea, more sammies, more tea. The next thing I knew the sweets had arrived:
Coffee cake, brownies, nanaimo bars, lemon loaf, toffee/coconut squares, some dark choco-concoction, there wasn't a bad one in the bunch that I had. Somehow I was able to only eat one napkin-serving os desserts.
The post-church rush started to pick up, so we downed yet another cup of tea and sped away.
You know, I kind of feel bad for people who miss out on these, who knows how many hungry people drove right past all these goodies this afternoon? Pity.
Brake burns, church suppers,
fireman's breakfasts, truck tractors,
surfing and all the other things that
make the south shore great!

First Nineveh Burns!
Coffee Party Luncheon!
April 16, 2008
Lunenburg, NS
One of the perks of working in Lunenburg, I get the chance to eat a luncheon offered by local church groups. What a treat, let me see if I can recall all the sammiches:
Lunch was provided by Unit 2 of the United Church Women of Trinity United (Rose Bay). If memory serves me correctly, it consisted of the following sandwiches: Chicken salad, cream cheese & cherry, cream cheese and candied ginger, a little pastry/quiche, coffee cake and fruit cake with cheese slices, butterscotch/marshmallow square and a peanut butter/chocolate chip square...
Let's just say that this is better than most of the lunches I make for myself!

Rhodes Corner Turkey Supper
St. Luke's Hall
Rhodes Corner, NS
April 12, 2008
This supper is like a designated hitter on a baseball roster. You can always count on this one to satisfy all your comfort food needs, wants and desires. When I saw it advertised in the paper, I think my heart fluttered a little, a 'must attend' event.
In our typical fashion, we arrived nice and early. No missing out on the coconut cream pie this time! We lucked out and found 2 seats with our backs to the wall, perfection! Turns out I knew a couple of the people at the table, we skate in Lunenburg at lunch time, small world ^_^
We ordered 'the works' and as usual, were not dissapointed (sorry for the blurry picture):
The carrots were a little tough, but other than that....amazing. 'Potato-y' mashed potatoes, delicious stuffing and turkey (of course). The first batch of pickled beets on the table were truly addictive, as well as the red chow chow garnish(not positive 'what' that was)?
Dessert was yummy too, I opted for the coconut cream pie. I saw others with ~3" high meringue, but I think I preferred mine. Sorry, no pic. They all looked like they were made from scratch, so there's really no 'bad' choice.
If you're ever in Rhodes Corner and see a sign in front of St. Luke's advertising a supper of some sort, do yourself a favour and stop and enjoy the eats!

Blandford Corned Beef and Cabbage Supper
March 29, 2008
Blandford Community Hall
Blandford, NS
Don't let the 'bland' (pun unintended) look of the plate dissuade you, this meal was AWESOME! We are truly behaving like 'old folks' at these suppers...in early, out early! You know you're from Lunenburg County when...it's 5 pm and you have already eaten supper. ^_^
The drive out to Blandford is just one of the perks of this supper. Gorgeous vistas, a couple nice beaches to walk on after your meal, secluded coves, the Aspotogan Peninsula is well worth checking out if you've never been out this way. But, back to the supper.
The food line had 4 or 5 stations, corned beef, boiled cabbage, turnip, carrots and potatoes and a bun were on offer for dinner. Not much to look at (varying shades of 'beige'/earthy tones), but a stick to your ribs, meat 'n' potatoes meal that cannot be denied! We had a long table to ourselves, so for once we got all of the table condiments before they ran out! Amazing mustard pickles with big hunks of cauliflower (a coveted treasure), bread and butter pickles and pickled beets that almost melted in the mouth.
Even the butter had it's own hand made container.
The last time we went to this supper the corned beef was salty. But this year they must've boiled and rinsed it properly because it was truly delicious. Loads of mustard and mustard pickles, a sprinkle of vinegar on the boiled cabbage. We were in heaven. And then the difficult task of choosing dessert.
All looked to be made from scratch, there really wasn't a bad choice on offer. All in all, a great excuse for a drive and a special meal.
