Backyard Wrasslin' Ring

Conquerall Mills (?), NS
Oct. 13, 2013

I wish I could have seen this backyard wrasslin ring in its prime.  Now, it's just a rusting, rotting relic.  From what I can tell from the road, the 'floor' looks like it's made of old mattresses.  Heck, it looks like it even has turnbuckles!

I've meant to take a shot of this spot for a while now...it's been there for over 10 years.  This spot always sketches me out.  I rolled up, took a couple quick shots and got the hell out of there. If I'm feeling brave, I might try to get a better shot of it down the road...for now, this will have to do.

Big Ex Demo Derby: Mean Machine

The Big Ex
Demolition Derby
July 29, 2012

If I remember correctly, this was a '72 Chevy Malibu.  All that really matters is that this car is one mean mother effer.

The driver was a 'seasoned pro', as you can see by how little damage was incurred after multiple sessions of 'smash and crash'.

If you get a chance to check out a demolition derby, DO IT!

Best use of a smart car ever?

Every now and then on my morning commute, I get stuck behind a human speed bump.  A smart car owner who insists on driving a solid 20-30 km/h below the posted speed limit.

Recently, I got stuck behind said smart car owner on snow covered roads. I noticed every time it drove over some snow, two rooster tails of snow would spit out from its rear tires.  At first I thought the tires were very grippy and this was how tire tread cleans itself.  Then I observed other cars driving by and noticed that none of those cars (nor my own) were producing snowy fountains of snow out the rear end.  I then realized this human speed bump is either: A) not using winter tires, or B) using winter tires but the car is so light it cannot create any traction.

At any rate, I hope the human speed bump isn't surprised when I pass him on a double line.  Sorry buddy, my kite buggy can move faster than you.

I leave you with this ridiculous video of a smart car fitted with the engine from one of the world's fastest production motorcyles.  Awesome.

The Big Ex: Demolition Derby

The Big Ex: Demolition Derby
Bridgewater, NS
July 29, 2012

You are looking at the aftermath of the 6 cylinder class at this year's demo derby at The Big Ex.  This car won the 'most crushed' award...or was it 'best crush'?

Believe it or not, the car in the ring is not a Smart Car or a hatchback. It is actually a Pontiac Grand Am!  Take a peek at a 'before' shot from an earlier post to compare.

As per usual, the local boys are keeping the Dukes of Hazzard alive with their tribute to the General Lee in the foreground.  (._.)

This car is gooood, but it could use more crowbar....

The Big Ex:  Demolition Derby
Bridgewater, NS

This team spent quite a while trying to pry off that bumper.  I'm not sure how it was attached, it seemed pretty resistant to crowbars and pry bars, that's for sure!

This car eventually won the title of 'most crushed'.  It's a Pontiac Grand Am, remember what it looks like because the 'after' photo does not look like a Grand Am.  Stay tuned!

The Big Ex: Demolition Derby

After a year of regretting that I missed last year's demo derby, I finally got a chance to check out the spectacle that is The Big Ex demolition derby.

What___a__shit__show.

I'm sure somewhere, J.G. Ballard was smiling down on Bridgewater that drizzly Sunday.

This was the scene that greeted upon arrival.  Sweaty men with beer guts, sparks, big pieces of metal, grease, etc..  All signs pointed to awesomeness.  This crew was.....welding something to.....something.

The stands were packed full of excited derby watchers like myself.  We were not disappointed!  Round after round of gasoline charged mayhem ensued all afternoon.  Stay tuned for more pics in the days and weeks to come.

If you are kicking yourself for missing out on all the shenanigans, fear not faithful readers.  The Coldbrook Lions have an event at the end of August which looks even MOAR ridiculous!

Billed as the 'Bash for Cash', it will feature 80-100 cars registered to get destroyed.  Heck, there's even a mini van class, what's not to love?!?

August 26th.  In a gravel pit.  Be there.  I know I will.

Spring also means...brake burns!

For those hankering for a fresh set of brake burns, look no further. Lots of fresh patches on the roads, this set was laid down on some sand seal road in Union Square.

Can't get enough of that wonderful Duff....st.

I love looking at this collection of.....trash(?) on my walks during the lunch hour. I finally mustered the nerve to take a picture of it.

Every now and then I see a guy in there
...stripping insulation off copper wiring, hoarding propane bbq's.

Rutschin' on the dump road

Spotted on the Mullock Rd. (dump road), I'm hoping to snap as many patches of brake burns as I can before the roads are covered in snow...

Guest Review! Wrasslin' in Lunenburg

Thanks to Ariel Marsh and Kevin Fields for this first hand account of the recent wrestling event in Lunenburg. Check out Ariel's work here. (There's a sweet Bee Machine graphic in her gallery!)

Wrasslin' at the Lunenburg Community Center

Kevin, Dave, Julia and I headed down to the Community center for Mainstream Entertainment's wrestling event. They are celebrating ten years of wrasslin' awesomeness. Many thanks to baroing for letting us know this event was going on. I can't even imagine how my life would be if I had missed this!

We had no idea what we were in for.

Ringside seats? Yes please! This brought about a whole new level of awesome! For $12 a person, how could you pass that up? I think at one point, Dave was up close and personal with one wrestler (ed: Mr. Clean) who sported a pair of specimen cups, filled with some kind of liquid. Now, I won't speculate what was in those cups, but I'm pretty sure you don't want a face full. Unfortunately, that happened to the other guy. EEEEWWW!

On our way to our seats we passed the table full of loots. Tons of prints of the wrestlers and t-shirts galore. I picked up a sweet Bee Machine tee and I promptly went to change. BEST T-SHIRT EVAR!

The wrestlers were wild, with over-the-top acting and their sweet moves. But, the best part of the evening was when I saw that Crabmeister come a runnin' down the aisles sideways! It's obvious he's skilled in the deadly arts of Crab.

One of my favourite parts were the delightful costumes. Bee Machine has this sweet yellow jacket, luchador mask and striped briefs. The real J.J.B. came out with his bright pink tassled pants. Josef Von Schmidt sported the eye patch, matched with an officer's cap and trench coat, decorated with medals. I wonder where he bought them?...

During the intermission, we got our pictures on. First up was Crabmeister. I regret not doing the crab with him, but there were kids present. Next up, my all time fave, the Bee Machine. I really had to work myself up to talk to him. I know what you're thinking, “he's wearing a mask.” That just made it worse. Who finds it easy to talk to a man in a mask? Especially one who makes all the lady flowers bloom.

And what sporting event would be complete without the fans? Oh man, they were nutso! You had the ladies heckling the wrestlers to no end. The big burly wrestlers telling old ladies and little children to shut up was pure gold. I almost wish I had Twitter so that I could tweet all of the taunts coming from the kids sitting behind us. “You're a fatty fat fat,” “you suck,” and some rather wicked profanities escaped their little mouths. It rocked so hard.

At last, we came to the grand finale. The casket match! All throughout the evening, Josef Von Schmidt let his presence be known by proclaiming how much Canada sucks. In the end, he got his as the 7 foot Giant Grimez handed out a whole case of pure, unadulterated Whoop Ass.

It was a night to remember.
