First off, apologies for the lack of posts in recent weeks.  Hopefully the delicious shots from this church supper back in August make up for it.

Believe it or not, this was my first lobster roll dinner.  I know, I know...shocking.  My mom and her sister were the instigators to attend this event.  It was held on the same day as the Conquerall Bank Planked Halibut Supper.  That was my first choice, but we checked that one out last summer so we decided to try something different this time around.

Tickets were sold in advance, by all accounts most were sold before the day of the event.  We had no problem finding a table and our plates arrived shortly after we sat down.

The lobster roll was....amazing.  I'm not sure what I loved more, the food or the presentation.  The cardboard 'sleeve' was just right.  The white bread, New England style hot dog roll was perfect.  The potato salad sure hit the spot, especially when combined with a nosh of delectable cucumber salad.  Not as good as mom's, but a close second!

The desserts were to die for, are the shots making you hungry?  I'm getting hungry remembering the great meal.....

For dessert, I sampled the blueberry cake.  It was moist and sweet as it should be. There was a dusting of sugar (and...cinnamon?) on the top too.   Combined with the usual weak tea (not as good as the Maitland suppers, that's for sure!) it was a great way to end my meal.

We probably lingered longer than 'allowed', but I have seen plenty of oldsters take liberty with their post-meal chats so I didn't feel bad about having an extended sit, digest and chat.

Next summer, keep your eyes peeled for this event and add it to your 'must attend' list!

I've lapsed in my community grub scraping/reposting, I picked a good week to pick up the torch again!

Saturday morning, pick a side of the Lahave river and go git yerself some breakfast.  Saturday evening..I hope you like blueberries!

Sunday has a head to head seafood battle on the west side of the river.  I wish these folks would coordinate so they didn't schedule two awesome dinners at the same time.  Take your pick of a lobster roll supper or my perennial fave, the Conquerall Bank Planked Halibut Supper!  Check out my previous posts about the planked halibut supper if you are curious.

Middlewood United Church Spring Luncheon and Silent Auction Review

Middlewood, NS

You know winter is coming to an end, when crocuses start peeking up out of the soil...and the community fundraisers are more frequent.

It was a sunny and windy Saturday morning as we struck out across the Lahave ferry towards Middlewood. I had an idea where I was going...or so I thought.

When I reached the 103, I made a wrong turn, turned around and stopped at the Italy Cross and Middlewood Fire Hall to ask for directions. The truck bays smelled of old beer bottles as a jolly crew of volunteers were sorting beverage containers from their bottle drive.

I waited 'till I made eye contact with someone and then asked for help. The conversation went something like this:

"Where is the Middlewood hall?"

"This is the Middlewood hall."

"Uh, sorry, the Middlewood church hall? There's a luncheon happening there today?"

"Oh, you mean the Middlewood United church hall, yes...the luncheon is happening from 11-1 pm, just a couple miles down the road on your right."

We certainly asked the right people for directions. Moments later, we arrived at the Middlewood United church.

It took a couple attempts before we found the correct entrance, soon enough we were in this cute, small church hall. Like many churches in the area, the hall and worship space are connected to each other. We entered the hall, paid up and started to look over the items at the silent auction.

As luck would have it, we ran in to the parents of one of my co-workers. They were just arriving as well so we sat together and started chatting. There wasn't much time to chat before the delectable platter of sandwiches arrived:



Turkey salad, seafood salad, ham and cheese, devilled ham...this luncheon had all the 'greatest hits' of the church luncheon universe. As we tucked in to our plates of delish, the devilled eggs arrived and were greeted with open arms (and mouths). So far so good, all the food was excellent!

Another server arrived with a plate of buttered raisin bread, I took a piece to be polite, but I never did eat it.... The ladies serving us were on a mission, to get us fed! We greeted yet another platter of sandwiches to our table and all selected our favourites. Eventually, we started to slow down.

Time for dessert:



I LOVE the cursive handwriting on the blackboard. My teachers tried and tried to teach me to write like that, I don't think I ever did get the hang of it. Definitely a dying art in the age of the paperless office...

All the pies were made from scratch, no complaints at our table! The coconut cream pie looked amazing, as did the french apple pie. I selected my fave, pumpkin pie. As an after thought, our server suggested:

"Would you like some ice cream with that?"

"Yes, please." I replied sheepishly. An excellent addition to my delicious piece of pie.

My tea order got a little mixed up, it tasted like a mix of tea and coffee, a minor blemish on an otherwise splendid outting to Middlewood.

Man, I could go for some tiny sammies right about now....

Trinity United Spring Luncheon

It's officially Spring, when you get tiny sarnies and squares delivered to your place of work! One of the advantages of living and working in Lunenburg. ^_^

I love getting these luncheons delivered to me at work, what a treat! Here's a rundown of what was in this year's Spring Luncheon:



Top Row (L-> R):

Chicken Salad: Made from what tasted like a 'real' oven roasted chicken, and of course, prodigious amounts of mayo....perfect.
Turkey Salad: This one was basically a turkey dinner, in sammie format. Complete with cranberries and what tasted like stuffing?
Ham 'n' Cheese: Classic, 'nuff said.\
Pickled Asparagus & Cream Cheese Roll: So cute, how could you dislike it?
Egg Salad: Another classic, yummers!
Carrots & Cream Cheese: A different take on the cherry and cream cheese concoction. A nice splash of colour!
Cherries & Cream Cheese: Perennial favourite, and usually the sandwich most people ask about (no doubt due to its very pink nature).

Second Row (L->R):

Shortbread: Excellent.
Lemon Loaf: Lemon'y and sugar'y, like the good lord intended.
Zucchini bread/loaf: Moist and delicious, complete with walnuts inside!
Buttered Raisin Bread: Probably my least favourite item, kinda dry.
Brownie: If you don't like brownies, you are probably dead inside.
Lemon Square: Even sugar'ier and lemon'ier than the loaf, also excellent.
Coconut cookie: Loooove coconut!
Ginger Snap cookie: My fave since childhood, probably the standout sweet of the lot.

A quick survey of the folks who ordered this it work had the chicken and egg salad sandwiches and asparagus roll as faves, as well as the lemon loaf, oatmeal cookie and of course; the ginger snap.

Trinity United Christmas Luncheon

I love these luncheon meals, can you tell?!?

We place our orders at work,earlier in the week, and then the kind ladies from Trinity United in Rose Bay deliver our lunches later in the week!

This one had quite a few people at work taking advantage of the service. And why not? Do you get a thank you note from Subway when you get your lunch? Huh? Didn't think so...



Now the reveal:



Let's see if I can remember, sammiches going left to right:

• Ham and cheese...slice, with some miracle whip dressing.
• No idea what was in this one, but it was delicious and orange.
• Cherry and cream cheese sandwich, b'yatch! Delectable, by all accounts, a crowd favourite!
• Egg salad
• Tuna fish?
• Home made chicken (or was it turkey?) salad, incredible. Ain't nothin' like the real thing...
  
• Rolled up asparagus and....I don't know what it was rolled up with.

And then sweets!

Various lemon loaf/glazed cakes
Cookies
Fudge brownie
Toffee bar?

All topped off with a couple slices of orange cheese! giggity.

I would get this once a week if they offered 'em more frequently. For now, I'll just have to be all whistful while I wait for the next one...Valentine's Day, perhaps?

St. Andrew's United Christmas Luncheon and Sale

I think I shrieked out loud a little when I saw this Christmas luncheon advertised in The Bulletin's classifieds...tiny sammiches, devilled eggs...sold.

The hall was warm and cozy, I love this place. Exposed wood makes it feel even cosier, with some neat exposed beams and pillars. An interesting space nonetheless.

Turnout was lighter than last year, so the volunteers made every attempt to load us up with food. Not that we were complaining, the food was just as great as we remembered. First round, lil' sammiches:

There were: cucumber, tuna, devilled ham, cream cheese and cherry, mock seafood, shredded carrots and some mystery substance...All were delectable! I have a soft spot for devilled ham, maybe the thought of eating it in the house of the lord is enough? Speaking of meals of the beast, devilled eggs!



Sorry it's out of focus, I am kicking myself for not holding the camera steadier, I guess I was too excited to eat these goodies! As you can see, some of them have a slice of olive on top of them which was a neat touch.

Dessert was a choice of trifle or apple crumble with frozen yoghurt. To be honest, we were both pretty stuffed by the time dessert rolled around, but we managed to clean most of our dessert plates. ^_^

I picked up a pair of knitted socks, mitts and dish cloth for a crand total of $15! Can't beat those prices.

I'm already looking to next year's luncheon!

Low on Vitamin U? Then you need....

Sauerkraut! Sauerkraut supper, to be exact...

This cold that is going around is a killer and my partner in crime was looking like she could use a home cooked meal. We settled upon the Lunenburg United Church's Sauerkraut Supper, a first for us to try out.

It was a chilly Sunday as we scoured Lunenburg for the United Church. As luck would have it, we found the Anglican, Lutheran and Presbyterian churches before we eventually found our destination.

The hall was expansive, about 2/3 of the tables were filled which made it easy to find a place to sit and rest. The male servers were all dressed formally, most wearing white shirts and ties. Before too long, a gentleman approached us and only asked:

"One scoop of potatoes, or two?"

I guess it's assumed you want everything else? At any rate, we quickly got our plates. It was a feast for the eyes and a welcome meal for those afflicted by a cold:



The corned beef was cooked perfectly, not salty at all. The mashed pototoes and sauerkraut were also delicious! The brown bread was just how I like it, a little sweet...My only wish was some mustard on the table, or mustard pickles. After we had finished our meal, we noticed a big 'ole bottle of yellow mustard on a nearby table. Oh well, we should've asked....

Dessert consisted of a familiar offering of pies. Luckily for me, I tried the coconut cream pie this time:



Several cups of tea later, and we were out of there. Lisa's cold was starting to win the next round...We left satisfied, bellies full of home cooked love, and all before 6 pm!(>_<)
