What's on this weekend? Breakfasts! Variety Supper! Art show!!!

This weekend is heavy on breakfasts (nothing wrong with that!) and light on everything else. 

That being said, the First South Anglican Church Fall Variety supper is happening this Sunday.  Protip: skip lunch, expect at least a 30 minute wait and try erryding on the table!  Here's a review from 2010 for an idea of what to expect.  If you are lucky, you will spot a scene like this.

Don't forget the corned beef and cabbage supper next Wednesday, so goood....

I mustered up the nerve to ask permission to take photos of the room where all the desserts were located.  The kind woman guarding the sweets room graciously accommodated my photo request.  After I took one shot she felt the need to tidy up the presentation.  I think she was surprised that I wanted to take a picture of her moving the cakes around.  I told her it was an 'action shot'.

So many delicious cakes.  I enjoyed my slice of carrot cake, though the nearby chocolate cake also looked excellent!

I'm glad I snapped this shot, it was a spur of the moment capture.  

I was headed towards the open door, in search of the washroom when I saw this couple heading for the parking lot.  They represented the majority of attendees at the variety supper.  Odds are pretty good they were driving a Buick. ^_^

I've written at length about this supper in the past.  Thankfully, nothing has changed since the last time I attended.  

While we were waiting to be seated I overheard a report from a nearby diner:

"No beef tongue."
"No beef tongue?"

"Nope, there ain't no beef tongue this yea-ah"

She's ruin't, I thought.  Somehow we soldiered on without the choice of beef tongue from the meat platter.

Luckily, we got served before the scalloped potatoes ran out.  They were excellent.

I sat across from an elderly gentlemen who polished off a solid 3 - 4 pieces of table cake and as many squares as he could manage.  His daughter kept looking over at him incredulously, he was a sweets eating machine!  

I managed to down a lemon'y square and a piece of carrot cake before my teeth started hurting from the sugar.  As you can see from the image above, there was a wide selection of squares!

Out like a lion?

Well...maybe out like a lion cub? Last Friday was a mixed bag of weather, thick pellets of snow (not hard enough to be called hail) came and went throughout the afternoon. It made for some great clouds, this scene was captured in First South.

First South Variety Supper- Review

This supper is on my 'must attend' list, and I look forward to it every year.

Seasoned pro that I am, I anticipated a solid 30 minute wait. So this time, on my way in to Lunenburg to pick up my guest, I stopped at the church and bought my tickets first.

Sand cascaded out of my wallet as I fished out a $20 bill.

"Were you at the beach?", the woman at the door asked me.
"You guessed it!", I said. Little did she know 'how' the sand got in my pocket. Let's just say it involved gusty winds, my kite buggy....and me flipping the buggy and getting dragged for a couple feet. Worth it! ^_^

I cleaned the sand off the bill, paid up for tickets and asked how long the wait would be. She said 20 minutes, but I knew better...

Sure enough, it was closer to 30 minutes before we were granted access to the table of yum. Shortly after being seated, our orders were taken (orders default to 'the works') and a plate full of 'hot' arrived.

Baked beans, scalloped 'taters', hot slaw and a random casserole were on offer. Gotta say, I am a huge fan of hot slaw. Must find out how to make that....



Round two involved finding space on my plate for the numerous salads on the table: broccoli, egg, 3 bean, coleslaw, carrot, macaroni...they had 'em all:



Oh, and meat heaped on in the middle. Lots of meat: roast beef, roast pork, ham and meatloaf:



That wasn't the end of the food, by any stretch of the imagination. Our server kept bringing bowl after bowl of food:

"oh, you don't have any chow down here"....
"here's some pickled beets"..
"did you get some brown bread?"

So full...



My seat 'neighbour' commented:

"This chow is sum sowah"

I didn't find it out of the ordinary, though I do love everything pickled and vinegar'y...

At this point, I had to pace myself to make room for dessert, no shortage of choices! Various Jello salads, pear or strawberry tarts (on angel food cake) with REAL whipped cream and of course, squares and of course....the ubiquitous table cake:







Sadly, I neglected to take a picture of the plate of squares. Sorry, folks!

We were a bit rushed near the end, as the seating master tried to make room for a group of family and friends. It was a blessing in disguise, had I stayed any longer, my next stop would've been at Frenchy's to buy a larger pair of pants!

Lesson learned: if you see a sign that says "variety supper", don't eat lunch that day.

Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church Variety Supper Review

Surely, the person coined the phrase "good things come to those who wait" must have attended the First South variety supper!

The last time we attempted to attend this supper, we arrived, looked in the door and saw this crowd waiting to be seated and promptly turned around and left:



This time, we knew what to expect and prepared ourselves for an epic wait....And lo, it was epic...

There was live music being played by what I assume was the church choir. The crowd knew all the words to songs like Tipperary, so the time seemed to pass by quickly as the many voices rose up singing. While I was waiting, I tried to take some candid pictures of the crowd, here's one:



Many, many hymns and one dog walk later, we finally got seated...it was well worth the wait! I was seated in front of a big, chocolate table cake, so tempting. Our server took our orders and brought us refreshing glasses of grape Koolaid to slake our thirst.

We noticed many familiar faces from Lunenburg at this supper, from skating rink staff to Save Easy staff to local hairdressers...all were in attendance.

Potato, 3 bean and a strange carrot and french dressing (?) salad were on either side of me...various jello salads, plates of squares, platters of meat and bread completed the array of deliciousness on the table. See for yourself:


Roast beef, Lunenburg pudding, some amazing ham and pork...oh, and beef tongue. Yeah, we weren't feeling that brave..

Oh squares, how can I deny you?

Our hot plate items were baked beans, scalloped potatoes, goulash (good 'ole elbow macaroni, ground beef and canned tomatoes!) and hot slaw. I ended taking a fork of each items from the comfort food compass of food on my plate for each bite, simply delectable:

Long story short, it's worth the wait for this supper...don't let the long lines dissuade you from checking this one out next year.

I think I'm still full from this meal!
