If I get my act together, I'll be heading over to Maitland for their annual Christmas Tea for the best tea in Lunenburg County.

Maitland Christmas Tea - The Sweets

Oh, the sweets. Sweets so sweet, they make your teeth hurt....in a good way. Sweets that make you diabetic in one bite.

The butter cookie was 'melt in your mouth' perfection. A tart square that had rhubarb in it was a pleasant surprise. A slice pumpkin cheesecake was sinfully tasty.

Paired with delicious, strong tea. I can think of no better way to spend a warm November afternoon.

Maitland Christmas Tea

Apologies for the gruesome state of my plate. My camera's lens fogged up after an evening of sitting in my cold car. By the time the lens cleared off, I had finished half of my cold plate!

Chicken salad from scratch, scrumptious potato salad, cheese and cucumber slices.... This plate did not leave me wanting. Add to that, the festive tablecloth and boisterous sounds inside the Maitland Community Hall...this was quite the event!

If you don't have plans on Sunday, be sure to head over to Maitland for their Christmas tea. They serve up some of the best tea in the county. Plates of squares and sweets will arrive at your table until you beg for mercy (or say no thank you). If you are lucky, you can score a $2 pair of hand knit mittens.

Pentz United Valentine's Tea

This wasn't a typical Valentine's day event, but in retrospect, it was way better than splashing down ~$100 for a 'fancy' meal for this Hallmark holiday...

We arrived to find a parking lot packed to capacity, but luckily we quickly found ourselves a parking spot without too much trouble.

The church hall had all sorts of Valentine's cutouts decorating the walls and also some office dividers, very cute:



There was a large contingent of Red Hat Society ladies at one end of the hall, hooting and laughing and having a grand old time. The remainder of the hall was peppered with church regulars and probably a few 'transients' like ourselves. I also noticed a man taking pictures of the attendees. Hey, that's MY gig! Oh well, the word had to get out eventually, right?

Before too long, our plate of sandwiches arrived...the usual fare: egg salad, chicken salad, devilled ham and pickles, cream cheese and cherry, a mystery meat concoction and a cream cheese and pickle roll:



There was also a server walking around with a tray of fresh fruit, an offering hard to resist in the midst of 'Forevuary'!:



We polished off our sandwich plate, and then it was on to the main event...SQUARES!!!



I don't think there was a square I didn't love...mind you, we didn't manage to finish the plate. Not surprising, just look how many squares were on the plate! All manner of chocolate, cocoa, coconut, graham crackers, cherries, duncan hines icing and other sweet ingredients were represented. My midsection is probably still paying the price...

Last, but certainly not least was their excellent selection (and inadvertent display) of tea cups, enjoy!:

I remember seeing this one advertised in a Mun. of Lunenburg mailout that listed upcoming community events. I'm glad we got advance warning, because this is not one we like to miss.

The hall was sparsely laid out, with only ~10 tables spread throughout the almost cavernous hall. We lucked out and got a table that was actually lit well (photog in me was probably drawn to the light). The table was decked out in all of the Fire Dept.'s finery, tea cups and saucers, little plates, a bowl of bread and butter pickles and the other usual condiments. In no time at all, we were presented with the sandwiches, and took one of each kind:



Another server gave us each a plate with coleslaw, potato salad, cheese and ham. Pretty much a perfect lunch. We nibbled on the tiny sammies, kept drinking tea, more sammies, more tea. The next thing I knew the sweets had arrived:



Coffee cake, brownies, nanaimo bars, lemon loaf, toffee/coconut squares, some dark choco-concoction, there wasn't a bad one in the bunch that I had. Somehow I was able to only eat one napkin-serving os desserts.

The post-church rush started to pick up, so we downed yet another cup of tea and sped away.

You know, I kind of feel bad for people who miss out on these, who knows how many hungry people drove right past all these goodies this afternoon? Pity.

Petite Riviere Christmas Tea

This was the first time either of us had been to this church, but luckily Petite Riviere is a small community so it wasn't too hard to find. As you come up the steep hill exiting Petite, heading towards Broad Cove, the United church is on your left at the top of the hill. It is a towering building with possibly one of the creepiest graveyards I have ever seen.

Once we figured out where to go, we pulled back the heavy wooden doors and entered Cozy-ville! It was an amazing tea and a very special venue. Unfinished wood walls gave the space a warm and inviting feel. Festive cloth table cloths graced the tables, complete with holly and white pine sprigs at each table. Ours had a little 'drummer boy' drum ornament in it as well.

Wave upon wave of friendly servers attended to our every need. First we had our tea (delicious) and then the sandwiches started to arrive:



Ohmigod, cream cheese and cherry, ham and cheese, mock seafood (fake crab), tuna and egg salad (complete with onions). I wished the afternoon would never end. Lisa was beside herself, especially because the sandwiches came 'sans crust'. A plate of devilled eggs was not far behind the sandwiches as we devoured every one that we were offered.

Eventually we had to stop eating sandwiches and desert soon followed. We had a bit of each. An uncoventional trifle: I think it had jello instead of jelly, and what I think were canned pears in the base? Rainbow sprinkles dotted the surface of the dream whip (I'm pretty sure it was dream whip) topping. At any rate, sweet and delish! The other choice was a mincemeat cheesecake, with vanilla graham crumb crust and candied oranges on top of the dream whip topping. Again, sweet and oddly addictive!

I am SO glad we ventured out that day, considering the horrid weather I encountered on my drive in to Bridgewater earlier that morning. Luckily the snow had abated by lunch time, and there was hardly a trace of snow the closer we got to the coast. I highly recommend everyone attend next year's Christmas tea, I know I will.

If you thought your neck of the woods was busy Saturday morning, you should've seen the parking lot of the Chester Basin Legion Hall! We were en route to a veterinarian appointment in the same town, so we thought we'd also stop by the Newfie Breakfast at the local legion hall. Sorry there aren't any pictures, I forgot my camera at home. :-(

To be honest, we were lucky to even find a spot to park, the lot was packed! A benefit ATV (4-wheeler) rally was being held the same morning for a local child who's undergoing some expensive medical treatments in Montreal. But really, I'm sure this happy group of 'off roaders' needs little excuse to gather and tear around the county on those noisy beasts of theirs.

The atmosphere inside the hall was chaotic to say the least. There was a small line forming, and we queued up dilligently. Some impatient fellow kept whining behind us, "this line's too long, why's it taking so long?" It wasn't that bad, I don't know what this guy's problem was...probably because he had a major 'hard-on' for going 'muddin'.

Once we got up to pay for the meal, we were presented with a rapid fire series of menu choices and options: "toast or biscuit? ham or fried bologna (thought they only gave that to prisoners...)? scrambled eggs? baked beans? pancakes? hash browns? fish cakes?" Phew, I felt full after just putting in my order! Volunteers scurried around the hall shrieking out numbers, "NUMBER 25?!! NUMBER 25??!!!" Fellow diners helped out occaisionally, pointing the desperate servers in the right direction.

As full as the hall was, there were plenty of seats available, tables were decked out with stiff, blue vinyl table cloths. Our food arrived suprisingly fast, and it was hot and hit the spot! The biscuits were tiny and yummy, the fish cakes and baked beans were my highlights of the meal. The baked beans were dark from the molasses and tender from hours of cooking. A couple of kids were scooted away from the stage where a nearby crock pot of beans was quietly simmering. Who knows how long they'd been cooking? Long enough to be delicious, that's for sure!

The tea was also great and actually distinguishable from the coffee, which isn't always the case at these functions. ^_^ We savoured our meal, the hall rapidly cleared out of ATV rally participants and all that remained were the locals and folks like us who stopped in for breakfast. If you happen to be in the area, they hold this breakfast on the 4th Saturday of every month and it is well worth the trip to Chester Basin, Nova Scotia!
