First South Variety Supper: Table Cake Staging Area

Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church
First South, NS
April 21, 2013

I mustered up the nerve to ask permission to take photos of the room where all the desserts were located.  The kind woman guarding the sweets room graciously accommodated my photo request.  After I took one shot she felt the need to tidy up the presentation.  I think she was surprised that I wanted to take a picture of her moving the cakes around.  I told her it was an 'action shot'.

So many delicious cakes.  I enjoyed my slice of carrot cake, though the nearby chocolate cake also looked excellent!

Have satin jacket, will travel

First South, NS
April 21, 2013

I'm glad I snapped this shot, it was a spur of the moment capture.

I was headed towards the open door, in search of the washroom when I saw this couple heading for the parking lot.  They represented the majority of attendees at the variety supper.  Odds are pretty good they were driving a Buick. ^_^

First South Variety Supper: Squares

Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church
First South, NS
April 21. 2013

I've written at length about this supper in the past.  Thankfully, nothing has changed since the last time I attended.

While we were waiting to be seated I overheard a report from a nearby diner:

"No beef tongue."
"No beef tongue?"
"Nope, there ain't no beef tongue this yea-ah"

She's ruin't, I thought.  Somehow we soldiered on without the choice of beef tongue from the meat platter.

Luckily, we got served before the scalloped potatoes ran out.  They were excellent.

I sat across from an elderly gentlemen who polished off a solid 3 - 4 pieces of table cake and as many squares as he could manage.  His daughter kept looking over at him incredulously, he was a sweets eating machine!

I managed to down a lemon'y square and a piece of carrot cake before my teeth started hurting from the sugar.  As you can see from the image above, there was a wide selection of squares!

More pics to follow from Sunday's event, stay tuned!

What's on this weekend? Turkey! Corned Beef! Kohl Canon! Chowdah!

Sorry early risers, no breakfasts this weekend.  Thankfully, no shortage of suppers!

I get the odd person wandering to my blog after searching for "Kohl Canon".  Since there's the annual Kohl Canon supper happening this weekend, I'll just re-scrape this explanation from an older blog post:

"Kohl Cannon can be made in various ways, depending on whether you are Irish, German, or Scottish. No matter how it is made, the eating of Kohl Cannon was a common custom on Halloween. In it would be buried, well wrapped in waxed paper or foil for today's world, 4 favors. A penny (for wealth), a button (for poverty), a ring (for marriage, and a matchstick (for spinsterhood). Much excitement was aroused, especially among the young lassies who were hopeful that the Kohl Cannon would foretell their future happiness! This recipe is the Scot's Way!"

Also, this interesting Wikipedia entry for Colcannon.

The awesome Colcannon song!:

"Did you ever eat Colcannon, made from lovely pickled cream?
With the greens and scallions mingled like a picture in a dream.
Did you ever make a hole on top to hold the melting flake
Of the creamy, flavoured butter that your mother used to make?"

The chorus:

"Yes you did, so you did, so did he and so did I.
And the more I think about it sure the nearer I'm to cry.
Oh, wasn't it the happy days when troubles we had not,
And our mothers made Colcannon in the little skillet pot."
