First South Variety Supper: Table Cake Staging Area

Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church
First South, NS
April 21, 2013

I mustered up the nerve to ask permission to take photos of the room where all the desserts were located.  The kind woman guarding the sweets room graciously accommodated my photo request.  After I took one shot she felt the need to tidy up the presentation.  I think she was surprised that I wanted to take a picture of her moving the cakes around.  I told her it was an 'action shot'.

So many delicious cakes.  I enjoyed my slice of carrot cake, though the nearby chocolate cake also looked excellent!

I'm glad I snapped this shot, it was a spur of the moment capture.

I was headed towards the open door, in search of the washroom when I saw this couple heading for the parking lot.  They represented the majority of attendees at the variety supper.  Odds are pretty good they were driving a Buick. ^_^

First South Variety Supper: Squares

Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church
First South, NS
April 21. 2013

I've written at length about this supper in the past.  Thankfully, nothing has changed since the last time I attended.

While we were waiting to be seated I overheard a report from a nearby diner:

"No beef tongue."
"No beef tongue?"
"Nope, there ain't no beef tongue this yea-ah"

She's ruin't, I thought.  Somehow we soldiered on without the choice of beef tongue from the meat platter.

Luckily, we got served before the scalloped potatoes ran out.  They were excellent.

I sat across from an elderly gentlemen who polished off a solid 3 - 4 pieces of table cake and as many squares as he could manage.  His daughter kept looking over at him incredulously, he was a sweets eating machine!

I managed to down a lemon'y square and a piece of carrot cake before my teeth started hurting from the sugar.  As you can see from the image above, there was a wide selection of squares!

More pics to follow from Sunday's event, stay tuned!

What's on this weekend? Strawberry Shortcake! Turkey! Eggs & Bacon! Fried Bologna and erryding!

The fall season of community grub is back in full force!  Lots of breakfasts to choose on Saturday.  If you enjoy a good feed of newfie steak (aka fried bologna), head over to Chester Basin.

You might have to go for a wee bit of a drive on Saturday, but the trek out to Blandford is always worth the effort.

The First South Variety Supper is always a 'must attend' in my books.  As per my usual caveat, arrive early and expect at least a 30-45 minute wait before you get seated.  Pro tip:  purchase your ticket and then go for a walk or a drive to kill time.  Or, hang out in the pews and join in on the singalong!

Have a great weekend, everyone...wherever you are. ^_^

First South Variety Supper- Review

Grace Lutheran Variety Supper
Sunday, April 11, 2010

First South, NS

This supper is on my 'must attend' list, and I look forward to it every year.

Seasoned pro that I am, I anticipated a solid 30 minute wait. So this time, on my way in to Lunenburg to pick up my guest, I stopped at the church and bought my tickets first.

Sand cascaded out of my wallet as I fished out a $20 bill.

"Were you at the beach?", the woman at the door asked me.
"You guessed it!", I said. Little did she know 'how' the sand got in my pocket. Let's just say it involved gusty winds, my kite buggy....and me flipping the buggy and getting dragged for a couple feet. Worth it! ^_^

I cleaned the sand off the bill, paid up for tickets and asked how long the wait would be. She said 20 minutes, but I knew better...

Sure enough, it was closer to 30 minutes before we were granted access to the table of yum. Shortly after being seated, our orders were taken (orders default to 'the works') and a plate full of 'hot' arrived.

Baked beans, scalloped 'taters', hot slaw and a random casserole were on offer. Gotta say, I am a huge fan of hot slaw. Must find out how to make that....

Round two involved finding space on my plate for the numerous salads on the table: broccoli, egg, 3 bean, coleslaw, carrot, macaroni...they had 'em all:

Oh, and meat heaped on in the middle. Lots of meat: roast beef, roast pork, ham and meatloaf:

That wasn't the end of the food, by any stretch of the imagination. Our server kept bringing bowl after bowl of food:

"oh, you don't have any chow down here"....
"here's some pickled beets"..
"did you get some brown bread?"

So full...

My seat 'neighbour' commented:

"This chow is sum sowah"

I didn't find it out of the ordinary, though I do love everything pickled and vinegar'y...

At this point, I had to pace myself to make room for dessert, no shortage of choices! Various Jello salads, pear or strawberry tarts (on angel food cake) with REAL whipped cream and of course, squares and of course....the ubiquitous table cake:

Sadly, I neglected to take a picture of the plate of squares. Sorry, folks!

We were a bit rushed near the end, as the seating master tried to make room for a group of family and friends. It was a blessing in disguise, had I stayed any longer, my next stop would've been at Frenchy's to buy a larger pair of pants!

Lesson learned: if you see a sign that says "variety supper", don't eat lunch that day.

This Saturday is the annual Maplewood Maple Syrup supper, stay tuned for details on that event in tomorrow's post.

Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church Variety Supper Review

Surely, the person coined the phrase "good things come to those who wait" must have attended the First South variety supper!

The last time we attempted to attend this supper, we arrived, looked in the door and saw this crowd waiting to be seated and promptly turned around and left:

This time, we knew what to expect and prepared ourselves for an epic wait....And lo, it was epic...

There was live music being played by what I assume was the church choir. The crowd knew all the words to songs like Tipperary, so the time seemed to pass by quickly as the many voices rose up singing. While I was waiting, I tried to take some candid pictures of the crowd, here's one:

Many, many hymns and one dog walk later, we finally got seated...it was well worth the wait! I was seated in front of a big, chocolate table cake, so tempting. Our server took our orders and brought us refreshing glasses of grape Koolaid to slake our thirst.

We noticed many familiar faces from Lunenburg at this supper, from skating rink staff to Save Easy staff to local hairdressers...all were in attendance.

Potato, 3 bean and a strange carrot and french dressing (?) salad were on either side of me...various jello salads, plates of squares, platters of meat and bread completed the array of deliciousness on the table. See for yourself:

Roast beef, Lunenburg pudding, some amazing ham and pork...oh, and beef tongue. Yeah, we weren't feeling that brave..

Mmmmm...jello salad....

Oh squares, how can I deny you?

Our hot plate items were baked beans, scalloped potatoes, goulash (good 'ole elbow macaroni, ground beef and canned tomatoes!) and hot slaw. I ended taking a fork of each items from the comfort food compass of food on my plate for each bite, simply delectable:

(Note the choco cake looming over my plate)

Long story short, it's worth the wait for this supper...don't let the long lines dissuade you from checking this one out next year.

I think I'm still full from this meal!

Like a good neighbour, maitland variety supper is there.

Maitland Variety Supper
Sat., Nov.8

We were not going to pass up a chance to attend this supper. Especially since it was exactly a year ago to the day when we missed attending this one due to an impromptu delivery of a foot of snow! Not___fun.

We arrived shortly after the supper started, the hall was about 1/2 full, lots of empty places to sit and a full list of pies for dessert. Victory was ours!

The women minding the door asked us how far we had travelled, one of them commented:

"We get so excited when we see young people at these suppers!"

Her co-worker reconized us from a previous supper and also noted:

"Well, anyone under 50 is considered young, here!"

These Maitland suppers are awesome and this one was no exception! We both asked for "everything" by default and started to drool at the table cake and other sweets while we waited. Our steaming plates of food arrived before long:

The cabbage was sweet and delicious, the weiner was just what the doctor ordered, baked beans were molasses-y sweet and good, scalloped potatoes didn't leave me wanting and the fried chicken rounded out the hot meal.

Home made pickles, cole slaw and sauerkraut salad were quickly gobbled up...We found the potato salad later on and made room for it on our plates. There was also an odd carrot and red-brown sauce salad we didn't end up trying..perhaps it was catalina dressing?

The showcase of this meal, was the table cake. No contest. It was hard to avoid, as you can see from this picture:

Normally I don't indulge, but I felt oddly obliged in this case. We lucked out and it was an amazing carrot cake! Also within arms reach was a tiny plate of various brownies and pieces of cake. Needless to say, we left overly full of food. Oh, I also sampled one of the pies on offer, a subtle pumpkin pie:

It reminded me of the squash pie I've sampled here before. You could tell it was made with real pumpkin flesh, not that canned crap! Not too spicy, it was true perfection...now in convenient pie format!

Several cups of tea later (where was the suspendered tea guy? we're worried....), we staggered back to the car. It was 4:41 pm.

We must be assimilating well....

Lahave Islands Community Hall Variety Supper

Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008

A word to the wise, show up early to this shindig!

I knew something was up from the number of cars on the road. After purchasing my ticket for a ridiculously low $7.50, I realized I had a bit of a wait ahead of me, so I wandered down the road for some 'classic' seaside shots:

I returned to the hall, only to realize what I thought was #98, was actually #86! Still, a little more waiting, time to try some people shots indoors:

Before too long, it was time to take the leaning staircase up to the top floor, which is pretty tiny, as you can see:

Not long after I seated myself, I got my plate of....everything:

I'm not entirely sure which casserole I was eating, but they were all delicious. I'm glad I turned up when I did, a couple dishes were already 'sold out':

I had a 'foster granny' sitting beside me, who made sure I got some of each salad on the table. There were 4 or 5 salads, including an incredible coleslaw with fresh, chunky green cabbage in it, amazing!

Other folks at our table were comparing this supper to the previous weekend's blueberry supper in Parkdale/Maplewood. The overwhelming conclusion was that this supper was the better value, and tastier. While I can't argue the first point, I'd say it was a tie on the flavour comparison.

I found room for carrot cake (apparently I took the last piece, victory was mine!), there was no room in the inn for the delectable looking Washington Pie sitting right in front of me. Vanilla pound cake, jam in the middle, topped with whipped cream. I wonder why they're called Washington Pies?

The delicious cakes

Washington Pie in foreground

After all was said and done, I turned around to take a picture of the next round of supper eaters filing in to the hall:

Next time you see a supper advertised for Lahave Islands, check it out!

Conquerall Mills Variety Supper

June 21, 2008
Conquerall Mills, NS

I've waxed poetic about this supper before, so I'll probably be repeating myself with this one. What can I say, there is little to say other than: "wow". This supper is an elbow macaroni, ground beef comfort food celebration! If you don't eat beef or sugar...uh...this isn't the place for you.

Like the seasoned pro's we are, we lined up ~10 minutes before the doors opened. Not as steamy and hot as in recent years, intermittent rain was a nice relief from the heat. As we waited, the medium class team pulls carried on in the background. Finally, the line started to move.

Hmmm, how to describe what awaited us on the buffet table, lemme see what I can remember: potato salad, egg salad sammiches with crusts cut off, lunenburg pudding (blood pudding), rolled up deli meats, scalloped potatoes, various meat casseroles, swedish meatballs, chili, one amazing ham (dang, it was smokey and GOOD), mac 'n' cheese, more beef concoctions and apparently some spectacular baked beans. For some reason, I didn't put them on my plate!?

The ever popular pitchers of red Kool aid were present, as well as the urns of tea and coffee. The desert table had rhubarb pie, incredible looking apple pie, cheesecake (looked like mostly dream whip) and other delectables I can't recall.

Oh, and good 'ole molasses brown bread, biscuits and rolls:

For once I neglected to tuck in to the enticing table cake located every 4 or so place settings, though the brownies topped with sliced almonds down the table had me rethinking that decision..

Tomorrow, stay tuned for the church cold plate luncheon review and this weekend's upcoming suppers and breakfasts (hint: fresh strawberries and long lineups are involved)

Maitland Variety Supper

May 5, 2007
Maitland Community Hall
Maitland, NS

It's always nice to go to this supper, it's kind of like coming home after a long trip. Some things never change, and for the most part, neither does this supper.

We drove past the hall around 3:15, a good 45 minutes before it was supposed to start. Sure enough, there were two cars in the parking lot, waiting.......I guess they really wanted to have a slice of that coconut cream pie (we were not so lucky).

We arrived to a packed hall, and as usual, we were the only 'youngsters' there. We started to recognize some faces from the area. The guy taking tickets walks a nearby dirt road every morning. Same guy serving the coffee. Same guy serving the tea. All's right with the world in Maitland.

We found a spot to sit without much trouble and had a bit of a wait till our place setting was cleaned up and our 'orders' were taken. It was more of a: "you guys want a bit of everything that's left?" kind of order, of course we said: "yes"! Fairly quickly, our plates arrived:

Somehow these pictures never really capture how appetizing the food looks when it arrives....no wiener on the plate, to Lisa's dismay, but they were replaced by some delicious cabbage rolls!

We tucked in to the offering: fried chicken, scalloped potatoes, baked beans, swedish meatballs, cabbage rolls and ham made up the hot portion of the meal.

We each got a spoon full of the delicious broccoli salad that was on the table, as well as: potato salad, cole slaw, pickled beets, bread and butter pickles and an unusual pickled salad that encouraged me to have two helpings.

Oh man, how could i forget the sweets? By the time we got there, the ever popular coconut cream pie was off the desert list (and kraut slaw and weiners were off the dinner menu), so we opted for the delicious 'hole of coconut' cake that was sitting in front of us the whole time. It was made by one of our server's aunts and was delish, of course!

I hope to publish another tidbit to the blog if I can sort it out...stay tuned...
