Maitland Christmas Tea - The Raffle

It's raffle time at the Maitland Christmas Tea.

Somehow I missed out on buying tickets for that. I have no idea what was being raffled off...but hey, it's all for a good cause!

Maitland Christmas Tea - The Tree

The Christmas tree was balsam'y and fragrant, as it should be. A pair of stuffed angels are hanging out on the wall, waiting to be claimed by a lucky raffle ticket owner...

Maitland Christmas Tea - The Sweets

Oh, the sweets. Sweets so sweet, they make your teeth hurt....in a good way. Sweets that make you diabetic in one bite.

The butter cookie was 'melt in your mouth' perfection. A tart square that had rhubarb in it was a pleasant surprise. A slice pumpkin cheesecake was sinfully tasty.

Paired with delicious, strong tea. I can think of no better way to spend a warm November afternoon.

Maitland Christmas Tea

Apologies for the gruesome state of my plate. My camera's lens fogged up after an evening of sitting in my cold car. By the time the lens cleared off, I had finished half of my cold plate!

Chicken salad from scratch, scrumptious potato salad, cheese and cucumber slices.... This plate did not leave me wanting. Add to that, the festive tablecloth and boisterous sounds inside the Maitland Community Hall...this was quite the event!

What's on this weekend? Christmas Tea! Breakfast! Chowdah!

If you don't have plans on Sunday, be sure to head over to Maitland for their Christmas tea. They serve up some of the best tea in the county. Plates of squares and sweets will arrive at your table until you beg for mercy (or say no thank you). If you are lucky, you can score a $2 pair of hand knit mittens.

Regular breakfasts are happening in Lunenburg and Cherry Hill as well as several chowder luncheons.

St. Andrew's United Christmas Luncheon and Sale

I think I shrieked out loud a little when I saw this Christmas luncheon advertised in The Bulletin's classifieds...tiny sammiches, devilled eggs...sold.

The hall was warm and cozy, I love this place. Exposed wood makes it feel even cosier, with some neat exposed beams and pillars. An interesting space nonetheless.

Turnout was lighter than last year, so the volunteers made every attempt to load us up with food. Not that we were complaining, the food was just as great as we remembered. First round, lil' sammiches:

There were: cucumber, tuna, devilled ham, cream cheese and cherry, mock seafood, shredded carrots and some mystery substance...All were delectable! I have a soft spot for devilled ham, maybe the thought of eating it in the house of the lord is enough? Speaking of meals of the beast, devilled eggs!



Sorry it's out of focus, I am kicking myself for not holding the camera steadier, I guess I was too excited to eat these goodies! As you can see, some of them have a slice of olive on top of them which was a neat touch.

Dessert was a choice of trifle or apple crumble with frozen yoghurt. To be honest, we were both pretty stuffed by the time dessert rolled around, but we managed to clean most of our dessert plates. ^_^

I picked up a pair of knitted socks, mitts and dish cloth for a crand total of $15! Can't beat those prices.

I'm already looking to next year's luncheon!

St. Mark's Annual Christmas Bazaar and Luncheon

Last time we were at St. Mark's, it was a failed attempt to attend their Roast Beef supper, they ran out of food. Luckily, this time we managed to arrive in time for some good eats!

The basement of the church was the venue for their "Christmas Bazaar". Those in attendance were decidedly the 'blue rinse' crowd. There were a dozen or so people sitting and enjoying their cold plates. We were warmly received and seated as we waited for our food:





Pretty standard fare for this type of luncheon. The chicken salad was made from scratch, phew! The potato salad was really, really good. A hint of onion, but not too stinky, and of course, very potato-y.

Sadly, I didn't get a shot of my desert. I sampled the gum drop cake, and Lisa tried the chocolate cake. After we received our cakes, we were both bummed to realize that there was carrot cake on offer, but we weren't offered it in our list of available deserts! :-( At any rate, the luncheon was great and next time I'll ask for carrot cake!

After we polished off our cakes, we perused the craft and bake tables. The baked goods were almost picked clean, but I managed to score some delectable chocolate dipped oat cake type cookies, w00t!

There were deals galore for preserves and jellies. I picked up pickled beets, bread and butter pickles and cucumber relish. I spotted some zucchini jelly which for some reason I didn't buy a jar?!?

I regret it now, come back zuke jelly, come baaaaack!!

Petite Riviere Christmas Tea

This was the first time either of us had been to this church, but luckily Petite Riviere is a small community so it wasn't too hard to find. As you come up the steep hill exiting Petite, heading towards Broad Cove, the United church is on your left at the top of the hill. It is a towering building with possibly one of the creepiest graveyards I have ever seen.

Once we figured out where to go, we pulled back the heavy wooden doors and entered Cozy-ville! It was an amazing tea and a very special venue. Unfinished wood walls gave the space a warm and inviting feel. Festive cloth table cloths graced the tables, complete with holly and white pine sprigs at each table. Ours had a little 'drummer boy' drum ornament in it as well.

Wave upon wave of friendly servers attended to our every need. First we had our tea (delicious) and then the sandwiches started to arrive:



Ohmigod, cream cheese and cherry, ham and cheese, mock seafood (fake crab), tuna and egg salad (complete with onions). I wished the afternoon would never end. Lisa was beside herself, especially because the sandwiches came 'sans crust'. A plate of devilled eggs was not far behind the sandwiches as we devoured every one that we were offered.

Eventually we had to stop eating sandwiches and desert soon followed. We had a bit of each. An uncoventional trifle: I think it had jello instead of jelly, and what I think were canned pears in the base? Rainbow sprinkles dotted the surface of the dream whip (I'm pretty sure it was dream whip) topping. At any rate, sweet and delish! The other choice was a mincemeat cheesecake, with vanilla graham crumb crust and candied oranges on top of the dream whip topping. Again, sweet and oddly addictive!

I am SO glad we ventured out that day, considering the horrid weather I encountered on my drive in to Bridgewater earlier that morning. Luckily the snow had abated by lunch time, and there was hardly a trace of snow the closer we got to the coast. I highly recommend everyone attend next year's Christmas tea, I know I will.
